Violin

Session #2 - From 27 Jul To 02 Aug

Teacher bio:

Stephanie-Marie Degand is today one of the rare performers capable of mastering the techniques and stylistic codes of a repertoire ranging from the 17th century to contemporary creation. Trained in Caen by pedagogue and conductor Jean-Walter Audoli, as well as by Emmanuelle Haïm, she was unanimously admitted to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris in the class of Jacques Ghestem. From the outset, she asserted a pioneering artistic approach by breaking down barriers between repertoires, also joining the early music department. She thus benefited from the teaching of masters such as Jacques Rouvier, Alain Meunier, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, as well as William Christie, Christophe Rousset, Patrick Bismuth and Christophe Coin. She was awarded four First Prizes and completed advanced violin studies before embarking on an atypical career. A confirmed soloist, passionate chamber musician, committed concertmaster, conductor, and above all a devoted transmitter of knowledge, nothing escapes this artist with a “clear mind and ardent imagination” (P. Baillot, Official Violin Method, 1803). Her artistic approach has been regularly recognized with numerous awards: Grand Prix Adami 1995, Second Grand Prize at the Ferras-Barbizet Competition 1997, Classical Revelation at MIDEM 1998, Natexis Laureate 1999, SACEM Prize 2002, and “Instrumental Soloist Revelation” at the Victoires de la Musique. Her discography faithfully reflects this insatiable musical curiosity and began with a striking solo violin recital recording, From Biber to Tanguy, featuring three violins and four bows, including a commissioned work by composer Eric Tanguy, to whom it is dedicated. With Le Concert d’Astrée, which she co-founded with Emmanuelle Haïm and where she served as concertmaster and musical assistant, she recorded a repertoire ranging from Monteverdi to Mozart. With her partner Violaine Cochard, she recorded a Mozart-Duphly album widely acclaimed by critics. Her recordings span from the concertos of Chevalier de Saint-George to Tchaikovsky, including Haydn, Schumann and Dubois. Upcoming releases include Concerts Royaux by Couperin with Christophe Rousset and the Onslow Sonatas with Daniel Isoir. She performs as a soloist in the world’s most prestigious concert halls under the direction of Emmanuel Krivine, François-Xavier Roth, Jérémie Rhorer and Laurence Equilbey, particularly in the classical and romantic repertoire on period instruments. Her regular chamber music partners include Marie-Josèphe Jude, François-Frédéric Guy, Julien Chauvin, Christophe Rousset, Emmanuelle Bertrand, Marc Coppey and Miguel Da Silva. In 2015, she made her debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Alongside her career as a performer, she has progressively devoted herself to conducting. From the violin, she has directed the Liège Philharmonic Orchestra, Les Violons du Roy and the Orchestre d’Auvergne, and with the baton she served as assistant conductor for Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in late 2016. Holder of the Certificat d’Aptitude, she is Professor of Violin at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris and also teaches historically informed performance in the early music department. Depending on the repertoire, she plays two magnificent 18th-century Italian violins: a Joseph Catenari (Turin, 1710) and a Gennaro Gagliano (Naples, 1752).
