In-depth exploration of the harp
Born in 1967, Marie-Pierre Langlamet studied music at the Conservatoire of Nice with Elizabeth Fontan-Binoche. At only 17, she obtained the position of principal harp of the Nice Orchestra, but after one year decided to move to the United States to further her training at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
She very early won numerous international prizes: in 1983, Second Prize (First Laureate) at the Maria Korchinska Competition (England); in 1984, First Prize at the Louise Charpentier Competition of the Cité des Arts in Paris; in 1986, Second Prize (First Laureate) at the CIEM in Geneva; in 1989, First Prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition in New York; and in 1992, First Prize at the International Harp Competition of Israel.
Since 1993, Marie-Pierre Langlamet has been principal harp of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (under Simon Rattle), after holding the same position at the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York from 1988 to 1993 (under James Levine).
Alongside this, she pursues an active career as a soloist and chamber musician. She has performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Israel Philharmonic, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Swiss Radio Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lille and many others. She has appeared as a soloist under Claudio Abbado, Simon Rattle, Marek Janowski, Donald Runnicles, Hugh Wolff, François-Xavier Roth, Ilan Volkov and Horst Stein, in such prestigious halls as the Berlin Philharmonie, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Royal Albert Hall in London, Avery Fisher Hall in New York, Salle Pleyel in Paris and the KKL in Lucerne.
In chamber music, she performs with Emmanuel Pahud, François Leleux, Paul Meyer, Renaud and Gautier Capuçon, Tabea Zimmermann, Jean-Guihen Queyras and Marc Coppey.
She is a Juventus Prize laureate (Council of Europe). In 2003 she received the Cino del Duca Prize from the Académie des Beaux-Arts and has been a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters since 2009. She has developed a close relationship with the American composer Sebastian Currier, for whom she commissioned several works, including the harp concerto Traces, premiered in December 2009 with the Berlin Philharmonic.
