CNSMD PARIS

Piano

Session #2 - From 27 Jul To 02 Aug

Teacher bio:

Denis Pascal performs in France and around the world as a soloist and chamber musician. He has made numerous appearances in the United States (Lincoln Center and Merkin Hall in New York, Kennedy Center in Washington, Herbst Theater San Francisco...), in Asia (Yokohama Festival in Japan, Seoul...) and in Europe (Palermo, Rome, Venice, Lisbon, Helsinki, Liepaja, Madrid, Valencia...). He is regularly invited to Germany's prestigious Husum Piano Festival, where he defends the most daring programs. In France, in Paris, audiences at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Théâtre du Châtelet, Théâtre de la Ville, Salle Gaveau and Opéra Garnier have applauded him, as well as those at numerous international festivals. He has performed with the national orchestras of Lyon, Bordeaux, Besançon, Toulouse and the Orchestre d'Auvergne.

Denis Pascal's concerts are carefully thought out. Concerned with maintaining a historical awareness of the repertoire, he often ventures off the beaten path and gives concerts that are both memorable and accessible to all, rigorously applying a constant ethic in both the Lisztian repertoire and impressionist music or post-romantic scores. This singular approach to all aspects of the piano repertoire, as well as his ardor in defending rarer works and composers, make him one of the most remarkable artists on the French and international scene.

Denis Pascal's discography naturally reflects his musical commitments. For the French label Polymnie, he recorded the complete Hungarian Rhapsodies by Franz Liszt, whose expressive power was unanimously praised by the music press, including a Choc du Monde de la Musique, the Prix de l'Association Française Franz Liszt, and "Recommandé" by Classica. He recorded the Concert for violin, string quartet and piano by Ernest Chausson, which received enthusiastic critical acclaim. Shortly after, his collaboration with François-Xavier Roth's orchestra Les Siècles in Chopin's two concertos renewed our vision of the sonorities of these emblematic works – 1900 Pleyel piano and period instruments. Among the discographic projects that received enormous critical recognition: a monographic disc dedicated to Jean Wiéner for Sisyphe which received a Diapason d'Or. In October 2012, a new volume dedicated to Jean Wiéner's chamber music was released, and in 2013 a recording of Schubert's Moments musicaux and Sonata D.960.

A disciple of Pierre Sancan, he studied at the CNSM de Paris also with Jacques Rouvier, Léon Fleisher and György Sandor. Laureate of the international competitions of Lisbon, Concert Artist Guild of New York, and Zürich, he immediately went to perfect his skills with György Sebők at Indiana University in Bloomington for three years. This was followed by regular collaborations and tours with the great cellist Janos Starker.

A unanimously appreciated pedagogue, Denis Pascal was appointed professor at the CNSM de Lyon in January 2010, then at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris in April 2011. He has also contributed to the development of several didactic works in collaboration with the Cité de la Musique de Paris. He is the founder of several musical seasons, including the "Les Tons Voisins" season – International Chamber Music Encounters in Albi – which has been very successful. Unanimously praised by the press, this season takes place in the most unexpected venues of this city recently classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
