Teacher bio:

Originally from Brussels, Daniel Rubenstein leads a remarkable musical career distinguished by his versatility. A violinist, violist, and pianist, he graduated with distinction from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and Indiana University (USA), where he perfected all three instruments at the highest level. A recognized concert artist, prolific chamber musician, dedicated pedagogue, artistic director, and researcher-transcriber, he devotes his life to music in all its forms.

A multi-talented musician, Daniel Rubenstein moves effortlessly from violin to viola, as well as from piano to artistic direction. As a violinist or violist, he has performed as a soloist, in recital, and in chamber music in over 20 countries, notably in prestigious venues such as the Henri Leboeuf Hall, Flagey, and the Koningin Elisabethzaal in Belgium, the Manuel De Falla Auditorium in Spain, the Henry Crown Symphony Hall in Jerusalem, the Tel-Aviv Museum, Kadıköy Süreyya in Istanbul, the Acropolium of Carthage, the Antalya Philharmonic, and the Minato Mirai Hall in Yokohama, among others.

First Prize winner of the national competitions Pro Civitate, Édouard Deru, and Lioness Club Young Virtuoso, Daniel Rubenstein gave his first solo concert at the age of 15 with the National Orchestra of Belgium under the direction of Mendi Rodan, subsequently performing under conductors such as André Vandernoot, Jean-Pierre Wallez, Proinssias O'Duin, Georges Octors, and Ronald Zollman, as well as on tour with the Soloists of Waterloo, of which he was concertmaster for several years.

A sought-after chamber musician, he has shared the stage with around a hundred musicians, including Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden, Muhidin Dürrüoglu, Dalia Ouziel, Hagaï Shaham, Gil Sharon, Andrew Hardy, Alexei Moshkov, Eyal Shiloach, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Alexander Dmitriev, Luc Dewez, Miha Haran, Justus Grimm, and Marc Grauwels, or in more occasional collaborations with Brigitte Engerer, Abdel-Rahman El Bacha, Daniel Blumenthal, Peter Frankl, Olivier Charlier, Augustin Dumay, Francis Orval, Michel Lethiec, and Pascal Moragues, to name but a few. He was the violist of the Mahler Piano Quartet, the Guarneri String Trio, and the Trio Estampes for 15 years, and is currently first violinist of the Ensemble Mendelssohn, one of the few European ensembles specializing in string quintets and sextets, with or without piano.

Daniel Rubenstein has also premiered over 50 works, from solo to sextet, including many pieces composed specially for him by renowned composers such as Hao-Fu Zhang, Jacqueline Fontyn, Don Freund, Jan Van Landeghem, Frédéric Van Rossum, Claude Ledoux, Michel Lysight, Oded Zehavi, David Loeb, Jean-Pierre Deleuze, and Jan Freidlin, or by rising composers of the younger generation such as Talia Amar, Adrien Tsilogiannis, Stéphane Orlando, and Nicolas Meunier. He thus combines fidelity to tradition with openness to modern languages. In Israel, he notably premiered Aviya Kopelman's concerto for violin and oud, also demonstrating his commitment to bold projects.

His discography, released by labels such as DUX, Talent Records, Harp&Co, and Pavane Records, illustrates his artistic diversity: recitals, chamber music, and contemporary creations. These recordings, praised by the international press (Gramophone, Crescendo, Classica, Fanfare, Musicweb, AllMusic), testify to his taste for repertoire research.

Daniel Rubenstein is also committed to promoting chamber music, notably as artistic director of the Mozart Festival – Waterloo International Music Festival –, whose 26th edition took place in 2024. This festival, which has also been exported to Japan, operates as an international artist residency and celebrates musical excellence in a friendly and warm setting.

As a researcher, he is particularly interested in major works for violin and viola, and has made transcriptions of major works, notably by Beethoven, in chamber music versions.

Daniel Rubenstein began learning the violin at the age of 6, benefiting from the teaching of Marie-Christine Springuel, José Pingen, and later his father, Jerrold Rubenstein. At just 16, he entered the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he studied with Marcel Debot, then Philippe Hirshhorn. He continued his studies for five years at Indiana University in Bloomington (USA), with Miriam Fried, then Franco Gulli. At the same time, he enriched his training by studying for six months with Nicolas Chumachenco in Freiburg (Germany) and during two summers at the Academia Chigiana in Siena (Italy) with Boris Belkin.

In addition to his violin studies, Daniel Rubenstein distinguished himself on viola, obtaining the diploma and soloist competition of Indiana University after three years of study in Atar Arad's class. Furthermore, he completed full piano studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, in the classes of Orit Ouziel and Robert Redaelli, earning the Higher Diploma in piano with distinction.

Drawing on this diverse training, the transmission of his knowledge is one of the pillars of his activities. Professor of violin, viola, and chamber music at the Royal Conservatory of Mons (Arts²) as well as associate professor of chamber music at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, he has trained many students, some of whom have distinguished themselves in national competitions or have since established themselves as members of renowned ensembles. Additionally, Daniel Rubenstein regularly gives masterclasses in Belgium and abroad, sharing his experience and vision with musicians from all backgrounds.
