Why Chamber Music lessons?

  1. The practice of chamber music is fundamental in the musical development of every instrumental student. Beyond “playing together”, its teaching aims to deepen the art of listening so that each instrumentalist learns to play their own part in service of the work as a whole. It establishes the foundations of the musician's functioning for building a musical project: polyphonic reading and listening, harmonic listening and intonation work, setting up a collective rhythmic project, work on sound homogeneity, stylistic research, deepening of instrumental technique.

Preparation for competitions and concerts, deepening of repertoires or particular languages (classical style, romantic repertoire, Second Viennese School, French music, 20th-century classics, contemporary repertoire, …)

Agnès Sulem Bialobroda has been the first violin of the Quatuor Rosamonde (quatuorrosamonde.com) since its creation in 1981 and Professor of Chamber Music – string quartet class – at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon since 2012.

The Quatuor Rosamonde has won numerous prizes in international competitions (Prize of the International Evian Competition, First Prize of the International String Quartet Competition of the Union of European Radios in Salzburg) and pursues an international career.

The discography of the Quatuor Rosamonde is rich with more than thirty CDs and DVDs for labels such as Harmonia Mundi, Arion, Fuga Libera, ZigZag Territoires, Transart, Editions Jade…, distinguished by the highest awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque from the Académie Charles Cros. It bears witness to their commitment to addressing the most varied repertoire, from the Viennese classics to French music and contemporary creation.

Several films on the Quatuor Rosamonde have been made by Vincent Bataillon: “Notes pour un Quatuor” focuses on the creative process in the interpretation of Beethoven’s quartets, “Au cœur de la musique de notre temps”, filmed at the Abbey of Fontevraud, is dedicated to French music, and “Ainsi la Nuit” testifies to the long collaboration of the Quatuor Rosamonde with the composer Henri Dutilleux, who considered their reading of his quartet Ainsi la Nuit as the reference version of the work.

The latest recordings by the Quatuor Rosamonde, “Viennese Legacy”, volumes I and II, released by Arion in 2023 and 2025, are dedicated to the quartets of Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Berg, and Webern.

The Quatuor Rosamonde is very active in the contemporary repertoire and many composers have written for it. It has worked in particular in close collaboration with Pascal Dusapin, Philippe Fénelon, Renaud Gagneux, Philippe Hersant, György Kurtág, Jacques Lenot, Michèle Reverdy, François Sarhan, Eric Tanguy, Ton-That Tiêt. It has also benefited from inspiring collaborations with artists such as Raphaël Hillyer and Eugene Lehner, violist of the Kolisch Quartet and friend of Schoenberg and Bartók. Alongside her chamber music activities, Agnès Sulem has performed as a soloist with the Ensemble Intercontemporain, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestre de Cannes Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, the International Orchestra of Jeunesses Musicales under the direction of Pierre Boulez, Maurizio Kagel, Pol Mule, Philippe Bender, Jean-Marc Cochereau, Marcello Viotti.
