Hailed by CBC Music as one of Canada's greatest young musicians, pianist Tony Yike Yang first came to international attention in 2015 when he became the youngest prize winner in the history of the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, winning fifth prize at the age of 16. He has also won prizes at the Van Cliburn, Gina Bachauer, Hilton Head, and Cooper International Piano Competitions, as well as the Bösendorfer & Yamaha USASU Competition.
As a soloist, Yang has performed in nearly 40 countries, in venues such as Carnegie Hall, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, Seoul Arts Center, Stadtcasino Basel, Koerner Hall, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, Severance Hall, the Esplanade in Singapore, and Theatro Municipal de São Paulo. His orchestral engagements include collaborations with the Cleveland Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony, Orchestre Métropolitain, and the Basel Proms Orchestra.
Yang has also performed for numerous royals and dignitaries, including Her Majesty Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom, Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of Belgium, former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, former Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah, and Polish President Andrzej Duda, among others.
Born in Chongqing and raised in Toronto, Yang recently graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. He is an artist in residence at the Ingesund Piano Center in Sweden and at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He was also a fellow at the International Piano Academy Lake Como. He is currently pursuing a Master of Music at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover under Prof. Arie Vardi, and has been named "One to Watch" by Scala Radio UK.
Since 2022, Yang has been a guest artist with the Toronto-based charity "Looking at the Stars," giving 5 to 10 concerts annually in prisons in Lithuania and the United States.
